1.4 Compare and Line Up: Comparing and Ordering

On the number line the bigger number sits farther right — and place value tells you which without the picture.

Once you can name a number, the next question is almost always which one is bigger? — whose house comes later on the street, who scored more points, which price is the better deal. There are two honest ways to answer. The first is a picture: lay the numbers out on the number line like marks on a ruler, and the one farther to the right is the larger. The second needs no picture at all: you read the numbers place by place from the left, and the first place where they differ settles it. We then write the result with one of three signs — >, <, or = — whose open mouth always faces the bigger number. Line several numbers up by size and you can put a whole list in order, smallest to largest or back again.

1.4.1 A number's spot on the number line

Imagine a ruler that never ends. Every whole number has its own mark on it: 0 at the start, then 1, 2, 3, stepping the same distance each time. Because the steps are equal, a number's position tells you its size at a glance: the farther right you go, the bigger the number; the farther left, the smaller.

So comparing two numbers can be as simple as seeing who stands farther right. On the line below, 37 and 62 are marked. The mark for 62 is clearly to the right of 37 — and that is the whole reason 62 is the larger of the two.

1.4.2 How to compare sizes — read place by place

The number line is a lovely picture, but you don't always have one handy. Luckily you can compare any two whole numbers just by looking at their digits, using everything you learned about place value.

Here is the rule, in two steps:

Step 1 — count the digits. For whole numbers with no leading zeros, more digits means bigger. A three-digit number like 305 is larger than any two-digit number, because the smallest three-digit number, 100, already beats the largest two-digit number, 99.

Step 2 — if the digit counts match, compare from the highest place down. Line the numbers up by place and scan left to right. The first place where the digits differ decides everything — there is no need to look any further right.

Take 305 versus 299. Both have three digits, so we compare the highest place first: the hundreds. Here 3 hundreds beats 2 hundreds, so 305 is larger — and we never even glance at the tens or ones. Three hundred-something always beats two hundred-something.

Example

Compare 472 and 461. Hundreds match (4 = 4). Move right to the tens: 7 tens versus 6 tens. Seven beats six, so 472 > 461 — settled at the tens place; the ones never matter.

Watch out

Do not judge size by how long a number looks or sounds — a fat-looking 89 is still smaller than a skinny 412. Compare place by place. And "more digits wins" is only a shortcut for whole numbers with no leading zeros: 007 is just 7, not bigger than 99.

1.4.3 The >, <, and = signs

Once you know which number is bigger, you record it with a sign. There are exactly three:

There is a friendly trick for remembering which way the sign points: think of it as a hungry mouth that always wants to eat the bigger number. The wide open end faces the larger value; the pointed end aims at the smaller. So in 5 > 3 the mouth opens toward the 5, and in 3 < 5 it opens toward the 5 again — same fact, written from the other side.

The open mouth of > or < always faces the larger number. Read it left to right exactly as written: "5 is greater than 3," "3 is less than 5."

1.4.4 Ordering from small to large and back

Comparing two numbers is one thing; putting a whole handful in order is the same idea repeated. Place them all as marks on one number line and just read them off left to right — that is automatically smallest-first. Listing them smallest to largest is called ascending order; largest to smallest is descending order.

Take the four numbers 23, 8, 47, 31. Reading their marks left to right gives ascending order 8, 23, 31, 47; flip the list and you get descending order 47, 31, 23, 8. Same numbers, same line — just read the other direction.

1.4.5 The largest and the smallest

Here is the quiet bonus of lining numbers up: once they sit in order, the two ends answer the questions people ask most. The number at the right end is the largest of the bunch; the number at the left end is the smallest. For 8, 23, 31, 47 the smallest is 8 and the largest is 47 — no extra work, just look at the ends.

Example

Four scores: 56, 56, 81, 42. In order they are 42, 56, 56, 81. The smallest is 42, the largest is 81, and two scores are equal (56 = 56) — equal numbers share the same spot on the line.

Comparing numbers this way carries straight into your next steps: deciding which answer is reasonable, and — in number sense and rounding — seeing which clean ten a number sits closest to on the very same line.

  3. Compare 305 and 299 by reading place by place. Which place decides it?

    Both are three-digit numbers, so compare from the highest place: the hundreds. 305 has 3 hundreds, 299 has 2 hundreds, and 3 > 2, so 305 > 299. The hundreds place decides it — we never look at the tens or ones.
  4. Put these in ascending order: 30, 3, 13, 31.

    Smallest to largest: 3, 13, 30, 31. (3 has one digit; 13, 30, 31 each have two — among those, compare tens: 1 ten < 3 tens puts 13 first; then 30 vs 31 match in the tens, so the ones 0 < 1 puts 30 before 31.)
  5. Of 56, 81, 42, and 56, which is the largest and which is the smallest?
    Answer
    In order: 42, 56, 56, 81. The smallest is 42 (left end) and the largest is 81 (right end). The two 56s are equal and share one spot.
  6. A friend says "412 must be smaller than 89 because eighty-nine is a longer word." What is the mistake, and which number is really larger?
    Answer
    Size is not decided by how long a number looks or sounds — only by its value. 412 has three digits and 89 has two, so 412 is larger: 412 > 89. Always compare place by place, not by length of the word.

This lesson builds the comparison strand of the Common Core. Reading numbers place by place and recording the result with the symbols >, =, and < is 1.NBT.B.3 (compare two two-digit numbers) and 2.NBT.A.4 (compare two three-digit numbers based on the value of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits). The number-line and ordering activities reinforce that comparison is about value, not the length or sound of a number — the single most common early misconception. Encourage your child to always name the first place that differs out loud.
